DIY: V6 Manual Transmission Fluid Change

I don't believe the weight difference
If the spec is 75w-80 and you run 75w-90, is there much of an impact/benefit?
Based on my experience, I believe the hot weight between 80 & 90 is so neglible, there's likely no noticeable impact. I chose 75w-90 because I use it in my other cars and have it on the shelf.

I used 75w-90 in my Evora GT too. It's fine in the summer. I found the gearbox likes to be warmed up a bit longer in the winter though otherwise I have some trouble getting into gear while cold. Will switch back to 80 next time to see if it makes a difference.

That's a reasonable assessment depending on your locale/temps.

@jp129 I'm at 6300 miles and looking to do this fluid change in the very near future -- my high rpm shifts are absolute crap lately, I'm thinking it's time! How has your smooth shift feeling lasted since the fluid change?
Thanks!!

The initial fresh fluid change feel was prounounced and noticeable at first. Gear shifts were slick and not as mechanical.

I commute with the car, so the feeling fades as I acclimated to the routines, but from memory, it didn't feel like that feeling lasted very long until gear changes went back to being mechanical. My other manual cars seem to exhibit the same behavior.

Thanks for the feedback -- I'm all for changing out the gear oil either way -- I drive the car, it'll appreciate the love :)

Yea, definitely. I change my trans fluid pretty often just because gear boxes don't have the same level of filtration engine oil does, but they shed quite a bit of particulates.

They do have magnets inside to catch ferrous particles, but I'll help however I can and it's easy.

I did this gear oil change today, thanks for the tutorial -- it went perfectly! (I just turned 6,600 miles) Quick ride to heat it up afterward and assure the oil / filter change also went well --- shifted nice, minor but notably smoother. I used Red Line oil --- one thing I will mention, when you pull the sensor plug out to drain the oil, holy hell does it gush out, be ready!!
One thing, I forgot to look for the filter -- where do they hide it?

The filter is in-line and most don't bother changing it. It's kind of a PITA and the OEM metal filter can just be cleaned instead of replacing as needed.

*edit: This is my experience with the Evora GT. @silent cilantro is correct noting that the Emira has a different setup.

The Emira uses a slightly different filter setup than the Evora.

In the Emira the filter is also a check valve that attaches directly to the transmission casing. It connects via a hose to the inlet of the pump. The pump outlet then goes to a heat exchanger that is also shared with the charge cooler and from there back to transmission via the top/fill port.

Honestly I’m not even sure there is a filter in there, might just be a check valve. I didn’t remove it when I changed my fluid.

Evora’s filter is much larger and inline right before the pump.

What page of the service manual is this from?
It looks to me like a generic servicing recommendation, possibly not specific to the Emira. Changing the trans fluid every 5k miles or 6 months is extreme. That's what I do for engine oil, and that's still pretty often for high end full synthetics.

I plan on doing my first trans fluid change soon at 10k miles, and probably every 25-30k miles after that. I also plan to use the same AMSOIL 75W-90 transmission/transaxle fluid others here used.

It mentions that it is 5,000 mile change just for cars that are tracked otherwise it's 20,000 miles.
If the car is tracked then it's going to have a lot more wear and tear than an normal road car. I can see it would make sense to change the transmission fluid this frequently if the car is often on track and especially if an automatic.

Tracked or driven hard (high rpm) -- this is an easy job and less than $100 --- and it made my shifts much smoother! (I've driven it for good bit now since the change). It's gear oil -- and it takes a beating. Change it and feel good about it. :) FWIW, I used Redline: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0041EDM6U?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title&th=1
