Hawk Pads are Best Upgrade Ever

@GRP Hey Greg,, looks like the Hawk Z compounds are back in stock for the rears now but not the fronts. At least that's what your website is showing. Any word on when you think the fronts will be available again?

I talked to Hawk directly about 5 days ago, and they still had no idea when the fronts would be in stock. I have been waiting for like 4 months.

I personally ended up canceling my Hawk front order, and just ordering Hawk rears and Porterfield fronts. Its a great combo and I am really liking it.

So, the 2 inevitable questions: with the Porterfields, how’s the grabbiness and dust?

[Off topic edit - just noticed the flag on my post changed from 🇺🇸 to 🇳🇴 which is where I am at the moment. Is that a bonus forum feature?]

I’m a bit confused I guess regarding which pad from Hawk you’re trying to order exactly? I just successfully ordered front and rear pads from them. HB586Z.660 And HB585Z.660.

I think the forum has always done that. It kept changing my location on each post as I travelled through Europe.

Ok, so it appears you are correct, I see these on Hawk's website now and they appear to be in stock and orderable (although navigating to them was a bit difficult).

From earlier in this thread:

Front HB586( ).660
Rear HB585( ).660

with the () filled in with what compound you want, as follows:
B = HPS 5.0 (Street for heavier cars, think mustang or camaro)
D = Motorsports (Light-to-medium weight vehicles in HPDE, Track Day events, or Time Trials)
F = High performance Street (Street)
G = DTC 60 (Autocross / Track)
N = HP+ (Street / Autocross and HPDE / Track)
Q = DTC 80 (Track ONLY – High Temps are required for Pads to work)
R = Street/Race pads (Discontinued Product)
U = DTC 70 (Track Only)
Z = Performance Ceramic (Low Dust for Street use)

With Z being the one I want and the most talked about/reviewed on this thread. A quick look back at @GRP website does indeed show the fronts in Z compound still sold out. (GRP's pricing was much better when they did have them in stock BTW).

So this begs the question back to @Glowtus : What compound (or part number) did Hawk tell you 5 days ago was out of stock for the fronts?

I got the Z’s. But yes, considerably more expensive then in previous posts and time frame. We shall see when they actually show shipped. 🤔Paid $500 for front and rear which is a LOT more then last years pricing!

I had ordered the "Z". Note you can place an order, and it will tell you its in stock on the website, but they were not actually in stock. That is what happened to me anyway. (If they are actually in stock now, thats wild since they literally told me they had no idea when they would be in stock in an email from August 24)

Got it. You hearing this @767Driver ? Sorry. Maybe another call to them is in order (about YOUR order)?

Affirmative sir. I’m skeptical they are actually in stock and will be sent. I will give them a day or two to reach out and confirm what the status is, but after reading all of the above, I’m not too optimistic. I’ll keep you posted once I get a definitive answer.

Im showing an eta of December 1st on those fronts now. I doubt they actually have them in stock.
Hi Greg,

I ordered and installed EBC Reds from you this past May because the Hawks were not in stock. I'm very happy with the their performance in spirited street use.

Do you think the Hawks are better performance-wise, and how do they compare to the EBC Reds in terms of dusting? After break-in, I'd estimate the EBC Reds produce 80-90% less dust, are far less "grabby" on initial bite compared to the OEM Brembo pads, and have been completely quiet.

Yep, false advertising from a few sources. Only the rears in stock. No Hawk HB586Z.660 (front pads) available and differing opinions as to when they will be.🤔

Thanks Greg. Since the pad material is the same as the rears, and these are available as well as lots of others with this material, it seems to be just an issue of actually getting around to manufacturing the fronts. Would you agree? Do you think this is just a priority in their manufacturing line or some other problem related to the fronts specifically?

Also, since you have vastly more experience in this than I, what is your crystal ball saying in terms of what happens when they are back available? Very limited stock, with a "first order in/first order out" philosophy until they run out?. Possibly before all the backlogged orders (if that's really the case), are fulfilled, and they go back out of stock? Just wondering if there is urgency for me to get in line now.

I agree with your post. If you hit the canyons, though, at speeds that put up 1.3 Gs on the dash, the dust gets bad, but they perform great!

Yes, of course, but in that type of use, dust was horrific w/ the OEM Brembo pads. It's the amount of dust reduction that is greatly welcomed.

Yes, 100%, but I went on a longer, very spirited drive Saturday, and my wheels are no longer silver lol. As noted, though, the Reds performed without any issue!

I can say they weren't factory because they were developed long after the Emira was released.

Thanks for the info. Appreciate it
Hawk has been making the Z compound Performance Ceramic pads since the early 2000s, over 20 years ago. I can assure you they were not "developed" anytime recently.

Also, the Emira uses a standard AP brake pad geometry that is shared by a number of other vehicles, so it's not a pad-specific "new product" either.

I havent personally run the Hawk pads so I cant speak from experience but from feedback I would say they are very similar in terms of dust level and performance between the two is close as well.

Once they are available again I don't foresee it being an issue to get them. Like Porter mentioned this isn't some special compound or shape, they probably had these on the shelf for years and then had a surge in demand due to the Emira coming out. Once they get a batch made up it should last quite awhile.
