I think the install on the v6 is going to be way easier than the i4. Yes the i4 makes a lot of power.
I wanted the v6. But I'm not stupid. I always KNEW the AMGI4/DCT combo would be the better powertrain from a performance aspect. One, turbo makes a much fatter torque curve. The DCT makes WAY better use of the power available and has 2 more gears of advantage in acceleration.
If you look at the AMG I4, it also makes way more power UNDER the curve. Its average HP numbers are way up. The v6 only makes its peak HP for like 200rpm at the top, most times we don't even reach this rpm before upshifting. The AMG flattens out a bit, so for several hundred RPM its making peak power, and the 8spd DCT will keep it on tap.
No matter how fast I shift, I'm never going to come close to the speed of the DCT. Not only that, unless Lotus implemented flat food shifting, then the blowoff valve has to vent boost between shifts as the throttle blades close when you lift between shifts. Now, its a supercharger, so the boost comes back WAY faster than a turbo, but thats still a 400-800ms shift, vs probably a 50-80ms shift on the DCT.
The DCT is the real winner here. Best of both worlds would be the screaming V6 (with a VT upgrade so you could rev slightly past power peak and get more avg power) with the DCT to keep it on cam.
Honestly, a valve train upgrade so you could spin about 1000rpm past peak power would allow the V6 to make a lot more AVERAGE power without actually increasing peak power at all.
