Also, @kitkat the unlocked/tuned ECU is the cloned one, not my stock original, which remains untouched and ready to step in for any reason that arises.

So basically my original oem ecu is still locked and untuned and working. My spare cloned ECU is the one that is unlocked and won’t start the car.

If it is similar to what we do on the i4, original oem ECU is unlocked so the data can be transferred to a spare ECU which is what cloning is all about. Then tuning is done on the clone so when there is a problem you can always switch back to the original.

This is confusing bc I was under the same impression as kitkat as that’s what was communicated to us. VF recently sent me an email that’s it’s the other way around.

2 things don’t add up.

1. The stickers on the second ECU we received which is now being told to us is the OEM locked ECU are different than my stock OEM I sent out. The first ECU I got back which is what was communicated to us as the OEM unlocked ECU has the same stickers as the one I sent out.
2. @3PFan tried both ECU neither worked so how can this be stock ECU locked and not work?

Reason this came up was bc VF said I need to sent back my ECU to have it fixed and that he will send a label. I asked if I needed to send both back to have them fixed and he said only the one. Advised I try the other ECU which to me was the clone and he advised that is untouched ECU. So lots of confusion right now

I assumed the same as you and initially reinstalled my original ECU, then swapped to the clone/other when VF informed me otherwise.

Another not-obvious-thing-to-me thing was how to get the car into the ON position, which is required for programming. You have to hold the start button (no brake) for ~8 seconds or so until everything turns on, then do your flash. If you aren’t in this mode and do the flash, the software (recovery method for the beta files I used) will still report a successful flash even though it wasn’t. This resulted in the car still not starting. Once it was properly flashed in the ON position, everything worked as expected.

Got it, I haven’t even gotten to the flashing part yet. I put my original ecu in and that worked fine, put my cloned ecu and that simply turns over but doesn’t fire up. So I guess I’m waiting to flash the cloned ecu with the new stuff he’s working on.

I apologize if there is some confusion regarding which ECU is which.

The *simplest* and easiest way and avoid all confusion is
1. You know which ECU is currently bugged. The other one is your true stock.


The whole process is being revamped and dramatically simplified (including how to flash).

And yes, another interesting discovery, thanks lotus!. The ECU can actually still accept messages, query a flash and *not actually do it* when the car is OFF.

The car is OFF, but the ECU is not.

I'll have the label to get back the ECU tonight, sorry I ended up getting super sick friday and am just now back in my office this morning (sunday).


We now have a clear process going forward and have confirmed the issues are resolved ( Thank you @Pd1)
