Of course we’ve all heard the argument that hybrid technology is the bridge to an all-EV future. I do think keeping some form of ICE in the mix is important for enthusiasts, and if executed properly it could translate into better sales for Lotus. The challenge, of course, is what “done well” actually looks like.
From what I’m reading about the direction hinted at with the Eletre and future models, I’m not convinced the current approach fully aligns with what has historically made Lotus special. Chasing maximum range, especially in vehicles that still have an ICE on board, feels like the wrong priority. For a brand built on lightness, agility, and driver engagement, adding large battery packs just to achieve 500-700 mile range numbers risks diluting the core identity.
To me, the opportunity with hybrids is not to compete with mainstream manufacturers on range, but to use the technology to enhance the driving experience while keeping weight and complexity under control. For example, something closer to a mild-hybrid setup like the 48V systems used in cars such as the Audi A3 could make a lot of sense for a future Emira-type product. Those systems improve efficiency, add a small torque boost at low speeds, and do so without the mass penalty of a large plug-in battery.
In the SUV segment, where weight is less critical than in a sports car, Lotus still has a chance to differentiate by going lighter than the competition. Smaller battery capacity would reduce weight, lower cost, and keep the vehicle feeling more responsive, something that would stand out in a class where most competitors are getting heavier with every generation. Also, compete with the likes of the Macan in terms of size to also keep weight down.
Frankly speaking, how many of us buying a performance-oriented Lotus really need 500+ miles of range? I’d rather see the brand focus on balance, feel, and engagement, even in a hybrid era, than chase headline numbers that don’t make the car better (more engaging) to drive.
