New Lotus Emira V8 Engine

New here - I know there is a lot of speculation on a possible new V8 for the Emira with a new gearbox as well. I researched and found that it will most likely be a version of the M177, used in the S-Class Mercedes. The EVO version meets the new BS EU standards, so it would be a beast with the M177. I'm waiting for the 27s, but if no manual, I'll just buy a discounted 26 with the V6 Manual. I hope it's the M177 NON-EVO version. I'd prefer a "clean" V8 manual with no possibility for "EV Gremlins".

A recent dealership conversation was that they are updating the 27 options now on the configurator (why it's been glitchy lately). I've owned two Porsches, so I'm looking for something different than yet another 911, and Porsche is having major issues in 26 on models and their 27 direction for cars. I've also looked at the Ferrari Porto versions & 296, Aston Martin Vantage (uses this engine), McLaren Artura (EV Gremlins), Lambo EVO, and have settled on the Lotus Emira for many factors. I love the exterior looks and new interiors, with the Lotus history. I'm a former USAF NATO Intelligence Officer and corporate slave for 35 years, buying my "retirement" fun car. Love the Nimbus Grey with beige interior.

I guess we will all find out soon what Geely & Lotus decide for the 27 US market - my gut tells me it will be the M177 regular or EVO version, with a new manual 6-7 speed.

Overview of the Mercedes M177 Evo Engine

The Mercedes M177 Evo engine is a cutting-edge V8 engine that features a flat-plane crankshaft design. This design choice enhances both efficiency and throttle response, while still maintaining the distinctive AMG sound that enthusiasts love.

Whatever is released for 27 for the Emira, I'm sure all the purists, motorheads, and exotic lovers here will be very pleased!

I think if they are pairing the w30 with a traditional DCT then it would’ve be hybrid, it’ll just be horse powertrain w30 v6 + DCT transmission
W30 with a DCT will be very fast. Given the good looks of the emira I don’t see why they couldn’t charge a lot of money for this configuration.

W30 with a manual choice, I prefer to shift with a stick.

I don't think they have said anything about an hybrid - just a Horse V6.

CEO Qingfeng Feng confirmed the [...] the new V6 engine sourced from inside the house at Geely, which has owned Lotus since 2017.
...
Lotus is going V6 instead of finding another four because the US loves it. Feng told Autocar that "they told us that they love the V6 engine, and actually the V6 version is our best-seller in the US market."

But this is just repeating what has already been posted on this forum already, this is not news.
That information came from Autocar, but many Chinese sources have dismissed it as untrue. A post on RedNote about the Horse W30 powertrain technical discussion revealed that a Horse engineer confirmed the W30 is not intended for the Emira.

I'd just wait until they announce it lol. I just spoke to someone from Lotus Corp USA and he said whatever is been said online is not true. Hopefully it's something exciting, I like what they've done to the 420. It's a step in the right direction.

Should be interesting regardless of the engine choice/transmission/new model or whatever really happens in 27. I'm in the same boat, contemplating choices, colors and order new or get a left over 26. Nice to have choices and regardless, a fantastic car.

I don't expect any major changes for the 2027 Emira. 2028 model year will bring in the new V6 Horse DCT powertrain. Expect a "final" V6 Manual edition based on the OG Toyota V6 or some other limited edition manual.... but I highly doubt it will be the last manual from Lotus - even though I am sure there will be plenty of rumours. After that the 2029 Lotus Esprit will be revealed closer to the end of '27 / early '28 with a hybrid V8. I can see the return of a manual Emira in 2030+, perhaps going the Ferrari route in the new esprit supercar as an automated manual. They will certainly be looking at how the journalists and public react to the technology.

So is it possible the Toyota V6 is the end of the manual Emira's - yes it is possible - but unlikely. Ferrari is testing the market for rare / expensive manual super car with this new automated manual - if it works out, I fully expect all other performance super cars to launch their own automated manuals. I could see them implementing this into the Esprit Supercar with the V8 and charging a good amount of money, but significantly less than Ferrari would.

I just like the fact that Lotus provides a solution to unattainable Ferrari's over $350K for 1/3 the cost. I like the 296 Spyder but now its pushing $400-$500K as they sit on lots for months/years! Ferrari should make a revision to the Portofino M now, or in a few years anyway.

A more GT Tour car, I feel, is needed, but a more refined one than the F8 Tributo, now $500K Plus USD. I was in this range for my decision process, then came across the Lotus Emira and came to the epiphany of common sense. The extra $300K invested in stocks is a better solution.

When the Emira is painted Red, most will think its a Ferrari. My hope from this forum's inputs from owners is that they tighten up their quality control. However, look at the Ferrari Roma, Amalfi and the 296 - all hybrids that few want, and they are full of EV gremlins and haptics vs buttons. Ferrari, Aston, Porsche and Lotus should all just go back to at least offer a pure analog car and let the consumer/buyers decide what they want to own vs being forced into a hybrid BS EV-assisted engine and poontang paddles vs a manual stick!

They can’t be that clueless. They must know it’s the manual and not the v6 driving those sales. How did the v6 auto sell for Christ’s sake?

This is very possibly the future of the manual transmission if it "feels" right. Could be the best of both worlds. Very innovative. Again, it has to feel right.

100% they know it's the manual (V6 came in both auto and manual, they know the sales difference. My dealer said 90% of Emira orders are Manual) - I do think auto companies have figured out they can now charge a huge amount for manual transmissions. It all started with the 991.1 GT3 - at first it was PDK only, then a manual 991 R went to the moon. After that 991.2 came in manual again with a good price increase, than 911 S/T. With this, Boxster/Cayman production ends - no more cheap manuals.

Ferrari has backtracked on never making a manual again, albeit it is not a true manual, but let's see how real it feels. Apparently it is very good and precisely acts like a proper gated manual. (you can stall the car etc.) If I am reading the room correctly, Automakers are making the manual artificially scarce and then charging a huge premium to bring it back. Lotus and any other enthusiast brand are taking notes. Expect more of the same.

I stand corrected, good sir! I had hopes for a v8 in 2027. I'll probably buy a pre-owned 26 with the manual. I don't want to wait until 2030, but I will buy only a stick. Paddles are not for me!
You will not be disappointed with the V6 at all. Heck of a great car. Really enjoying mine

I agree, 400 HP will be enough for me, and I'm not interested in 0-60 or 1/4 mile times. WTF cares? Are you on a driving team? Does Lotus endorse you at stop lights for times? The new 2027 configurator appears to be updated for showing interest/ordering on options. Certain versions have a lot of STD options, so not many choices when you pick your engine. No specifics on the V6 (if changed from Toyota YET) on the website. Some of us just want to drive manuals with analog buttons. Screw the EV movement and EV engine-assisted motors.

Is this a wished dream by the OP or just more fake news? A V8 won’t fit Emira without much modification. Enjoy the V6 while you can.

Read down a little further down the post. I read a BS article and thought it was real. I've since admitted the mistake. I am looking to purchase a 27 V6 after it’s been released and all the gremlins worked out hopefully with software updates. I have heard they’re going to make a V8 supercar but no one knows when mostly have said 2028. I also hope the quality control is improved as I don’t see brand new cars coming from the factory or the dealer with faults. It seems like they should be caught before the car is released. So my guess is some of the posts on here may not be valid. That’s why I posted the other topic about "what’s good about your Lotus " as I can’t imagine so many problems with brand-new cars within weeks of ownership.

It's the Toyota engine. There is no other manual option in the Emira as far as I know won't be for sometime if ever.

FWIW McLaren drastically updated the Artura for ‘25 and up model year. The spider is essentially a .2 version of the car. Have had mine for 18 months and 6000miles, no issues. Emira such a joy to drive though.

That's good to hear for a McLaren -I started with that (Artura) as an option and switched to focus on the 27 Emira V6

MB V8 would be cool but even with partial Geely ownership of MB, not likely to be found in the Emira. I concur with the above statements about Horse Powertrain. They will be the future hybrid solutions getting integrated at Lotus. One of my best friends works for Horse and confirmed they are hard at work on Lotus solutions.

The current V6 Manual is likely to be the last purist solution from Lotus for a long time. You can still order one. That V6/manual is a properly fun drivers car! I think the resale will remain strong but you will hopefully rack up a ton of miles and smiles...

I wonder if they'll stop selling the Emira in the US before any powertrain changes go into effect. With the recent dust-up around Bluetooth, wireless Carplay, and Android-Auto, combined with various US regulations, it seems at least conceivable that the political/regulatory climate might make the hurdles too great for Geely to continue funding any US-specific changes for a niche market product like Emira.
