Not sure if this is common knowledge but in case it isn’t:

I was finding my phone wouldn’t connect automatically to the wireless CarPlay.
I could connect it manually in the menu and was starting to wonder if there was a conflict with the tracker to phone bluetooth.
I thought I’ll physically plug it in to see what happens and that magically brought the wireless connection to life.
Then I half remembered something about it needing to be plugged in at least once to fully connect. I hadn’t done this.

It’s all perfect now. Connects instantly wirelessly and the tracker to phone function works perfectly too.

My android connection worked immediately. Turns on and plays music straight away. I dont yet know how to turn that off.

Mine worked fine the first time but wouldn’t reconnect automatically.

Afaik Android works slightly differently to CarPlay so YMMV.

That’s an interesting point. I plugged my iPhone in to the socket under the gear lever when I picked it up and CarPlay fired straight up. I did pair the phone for Bluetooth too. Wireless CarPlay now works ok. But I think I read somewhere that the USB under the gear lever only delivers power. Maybe it carries Data too? I haven’t used the USB in the armrest at all.

Thank you! This has been annoying me. Saw in a comment on Ade’s video too about holding the start button for 5 secs (foot off clutch) to switch into track mode for a proper start up

Yep, the socket under the gearlever is power only. The two in the armrest are for data.
Your carplay will have been connecting wirelessly only.
Plug the phone into the armrest sockets to get it fully working.

It is working fully and I have only ever connected to the socket under the gear lever.

Interesting. Are you using the Tracker phone tag?
The manual specifically says the lower socket is for charging only.
I’ve just experimented.
Turned off the phone’s bluetooth. Plugged into the lower socket - no connection. Plugged into the armrest socket - CarPlay fired up.
With bluetooth back on, wireless CarPlay connects.
So mine is doing what the manual suggests.

Apple Car Play has worked straight away for me, no need to use a cable

Just to clarify what I was on about -

My problem was it wouldn’t connect via wireless automatically, I had to use the menu to make it work. It would work wirelessly for that journey after I’d done that. I’d have to repeat the process next trip.

Since I’ve physically plugged it into the armrest usb, it has started connecting wirelessly automatically every time.

As far as I know, wireless car play is working fine and I have never plugged it in to the arm rest sockets.
I do use the phone as tracker tag and that also appears to be working fine.

Must be me then.

Not to worry, as I said, it’s all working properly now, however that happened.

Might be useful info if someone else has the same issue.

The auto play function in Android Auto is a setting in the Android Auto app, I believe. I disabled it on mine.

Settings > Apps > All Apps > Android Auto > Additional settings in the app > Start Music Automatically

I’m going to watch my start up procedure tomorrow and see what happens. Then plug into the armrest socket and see if I get anything different happen.

Started up this morning and phone didn’t immediately connect to car. Plugged in via the glovebox and CarPlay bounced into life. It had previously worked ok without me having to plug it in. As I thought about it I remembered that on my Jaguar which has wired carplay this only works if the phone is unlocked at the time the handshake is going on to connect CarPlay, otherwise it won’t play ball. So at this point I am not sure exactly what the right procedure is to get it up and running but I can and it does work. Maybe I was just rushing things and the electronics hadn’t fully woken up. If I ever get around to reading the manual I will see if it helps.
Not sure this post is of help to anyone but CarPlay definitely works!

Sounds like mine.

Been perfect connecting wirelessly since I did that one physical plug in to the armrest.

Question: if you physically plug into the usb port in the armrest usb, do you have the option to NOT connect wirelessly? Ie connect only via physical wire? The reason I’m asking is because if I want to use a mobile DAC, it needs to physically connect to my phone.

Yes.
You’re overthinking it a bit.
If you plug in, you’re wired. If you don’t, you’re wireless.

Revisiting this as I was still having trouble.

Found this on Apple support:

“Set up CarPlay

  1. Start your car, then make sure Siri is turned on.
  2. Connect your iPhone to your car:
    • If your car supports CarPlay with a USB cable, plug in your iPhone using the car's USB port. The USB port may be labelled with a CarPlay icon or a smartphone icon. Make sure you use an Apple Lightning to USB cable.
    • If your car supports CarPlay both wirelessly and with a USB cable, plug in your iPhone to the car's USB port. You'll receive an alert on your iPhone that will offer to connect you wirelessly during your next drives.
    • If your car only supports wireless CarPlay, press and hold the voice command button on your steering wheel. Make sure your stereo is in wireless or Bluetooth mode. Then on your iPhone, go to Settings > Wi-Fi, and make sure Wi-Fi is also turned on. Tap the CarPlay network, and check that Auto-Join is turned on. Then go to Settings > General > CarPlay, and select your car. Check the manual that came with your car for more information.”
As the Emira is the middle option I started again with those instructions.
Deleted the phone from the car and the car from the phone.
Plugged into the armrest and on the phone got prompted to ”allow carplay when locked” and then “allow wireless connection”.
I deliberately didn’t connect to the car’s bluetooth. The carplay setup seems to automatically put the car in the Bluetooth list.

It seems to have been behaving properly since doing this.
