I'm a bit surprised by this move from Lotus, but I am optimistic for the performance of the refreshed Emira. Based on specs alone, the car should be noticeably faster and more fuel efficient. It wouldn't surprise me if the car sprints to 60 in under 3.5 seconds. Will need to see actual driving reviews and comparisons once they come out.
The 4 speed automatic is certainly an oddity, and I hope it doesn't rob the Emira of too much driving character. I have not seen anything to confirm or deny if the 4LDHT is a DCT or torque converter style. Based on the images available online, its form factor seems that of a DCT.
I've always been more of a fan of the Turbo SE over the V6 with the manual transmission, but I suppose I view the Emira as more about all out speed and convenience rather than pure driver connection like the Elise/Exige. I've got plenty of other manual transmission cars to scratch that itch.

If the Emira loses a manual, and I were in the market again then I’m sorry. At the price point the Emira is sitting in it means I’m gonna go straight to the c8 z06.
I could accept a 6-7spd DCT. 4spd just won’t do it for me. Way too widely spaced gearing.
So to provide a bit of context.
The transmission can easily simulate and drive like a 8-speed DCT.
As a proof of concept, Nissan already have done this with their CVT transmission, faking having fixed gear ratios.
The exact same thing can be done, in theory with any serial hybrid. The ICE will only send power to the P1 motor generator, and the engine rpm goes up and down as if it has x number of fixed gear ratios depending on the vehicle speed and chosen gear ratio to simulate.
Now, adding the 4 physical gear ratios into the equation, for illustration purposes, let’s assume that the gear ratios correspond to gear 2, 4, 6 and 8 in a conventional transmission.
Because the P3 traction motor is so powerful and can generate up to 450 kw (603bhp/611ps)*, to
simulate 1st gear, the system can run in serial hybrid mode (a.k.a. range extending mode), the physical gears will be in neutral in this case. Engine power is only send to the P1 motor generator to generate electricity, the power to the driven wheels are provided by the P3 traction motor.
Going into 2nd gear, the system can switch into parallel hybrid mode, making use of the physical gear ratio.
I said “can switch into”, because
optionally even the 2nd gear, despite having a physical gear ratio present, can be simulated using serial hybrid mode as well. With sufficient charge in the battery, that may be preferred in launch control mode. Since time spent in 2nd gear is expected to be fairly short.
Shifting into or rather simulating 3rd gear, the system go back in to serial hybrid mode, physical gear goes back to neutral.
Shifting into 4th gear, the system again switches into parallel hybrid mode, again making use of the physical gear ratio.
The 3DHT version very
cleverly puts planetary gearset inside the rotor, a bit like Lucid putting the differential inside the rotor in their design. I can only speculate that the 4DHT is using similar trick with multiple planetary gearset or maybe something like a Ravigneaux planetary gearset.
I am not saying this is what Lotus will do, but only illustrating that it can be done based on the hardware specification.
Further I will add that
this can be done rather inexpensively. The lesser 3DHT version can be found in cars like the Lynk 900 starting at around USD$40,000. It is not some exotic or expensive technology. Geely can produce this transmission in China rather cheaply.
Will Geely sell the transmission to Lotus cheaply, and how Lotus will price the Emira Hybrid remains to be seen. That is, if this ultimately is the transmission of choice, which I began to believe that it will be.
Despite my familiarity with the technology, I will take the Emira with 3.5 V6 and a 6-speed manual with Komotec final ratio, thank you very much. Actually I personally prefer the lighter Evora over the Emira.
*Given the typically power curve of an electric motor, it’s unlikely that the P3 traction motor can reach max power in the speed range of the simulated “1st gear”, but I don’t think performance will be an issue.
