Step by step trickle charge

Has anyone done a step by step wiring for the trickle charger? The intention is to leave it installed permanently but I don't want to smoke the system. Thanks in advance!

How long do you typically leave the car sitting? I ask because in my experience, I've left the car sitting for 3-4 weeks without a trickle charger, while constantly monitoring the battery health and it never dropped below about 80-90% For much longer than that, sure, connect the charger, but it's not necessary if you drive it at least once a month, which you should probably do anyway just to keep things "conditioned".
