Door Handle Failure

Hey KitKat, I have the same issue with my driver's side door handle not returning flush with the door after opening. You can push it flat and the door opens fine. Took the car in last week for my second oil change, software updates and for the installation of the water diverter/AC resistor pack shroud that was not installed at the factory. Part for the door handle has been ordered under warranty and will be installed when it arrives. In the meantime. I can live with it...

Yeah I can just live with it for the time being and I'll have to take a deeper look into the service manual on how to replace them.

So I went and ordered both inner door handle mechanisms and replaced my broken one today. If you ever have to DIY this, feel free to DM me for tips. I won’t create a DIY for this because it’s honestly a huge pain in the ass and there are quite a few challenges as the instructions in the service manual are incomplete and don’t cover many of the steps including transferring the body colored handle cover onto the new assembly.

It took me about 2 hours and I could probably speed this up to 1 hour.

The stock coiled spring ended up being unseated from a slotted hole I’m not sure how the new one is revised.

My drivers side has just done the same (RHD). Its due a service but I would rather do what Kitkat did and do it myself.
I didnt have a lot of time so stopped at the point of getting the inner panel unbolted to reach up inside.
I was pretty gobsmacked at the weight of the door card assuming a lot of that will be the speaker.

This was my temporary 20 minute fix 🤡

Hahaha -- this might work for now -- eventually my broken coil spring displaced itself and made it so that the handle couldn't even sit flush before I fixed it.

so this is obviously going to be a problem on the pax side out of warranty as the number of use cycles will take much longer to catch up.......

Oh, 100% that’s why I bought both revised door handle sides, they weren’t even expensive.

On the other hand surely you can find another rubber band? :ROFLMAO:

@kitkat now steady on!

I now need to check if the revised mech price is cheaper than the flowers 🧐

Are they a Lotus part or from a Geely parts bin? I called my local dealer yesterday then gave in and emailed just to book a service so pretty futile going through them i fear

Honestly couldn’t tell from looking at the handles. If you can convince service to do it for free or cheap do that. You got done with the easy part, it’s just a bunch of bolts. The rest of the ordeal involves reaching into really tight spaces to access 3 bolts and separating the door handle cover from the old door latch mechanism without scratching the paint. Not a fun DIY.

...and if we're being honest, you as the owner will be a lot more careful (even if not as killed/familiar with) than any tech. working on it. This is why it's important to always think about what else will be broken/damaged trying to fix topic A before deciding if you should take it in.

what he said ☝️

@kitkat re
Looks like it's P/N 8890572619 which was then discontinued and replaced by P/N 8899012919. Called the following: HDL ASSY-FRT LH DOOR OTR OPENING

Did you keep a record of the new P/N from the RH side? I will have a go at sourcing a pair over here.

Cheers
