Custom MagSafe Wireless Charger

I finally got around to fitting this wireless charger to my Emira today. It took around and hour to do, you could probably do it quicker but I spent sometime experimenting where I wanted to route all the wires.

The instructions are excellent, whilst the operation to remove the glove box looks daunting it’s really quite simple and you really can’t go wrong if you take your time. Just make sure everything is located properly as you put it all back – the glove box, the plastic side panel and the rubber door trim all need a bit of a wiggle and a bit of a massage to get all to go back straight.

On a quick test drive the cradle magnet holds the phone firmly in place even with some spirited driving and over some bumpy UK roads.

But my Pixel 7a was a bit of a pain though, I had bought a case with a Magsafe ring built in but when that was fitted the phone did not charge (kept cycling between charging and not). I verified this was not an issue with this car wireless charger as it did the same on my home charger with the case on. The stick on Magsafe ring had the same problem – and also looks a bit naff.

So, I then bought some black closed-cell foam squares and made a “cave” (basically a 1” high square of foam the size of the charger/cubby hole with a phone wide slot cut out the bottom) to shove in the bottom of the phone cubby hole between the wireless charger and the roof of the cubby to hold the Pixel 7 in place against the charger without the magnet. The foam goes into the cubby far enough not to be seen, so it looks tidy. This seems to work just fine and my phone now stays charging all the time.

That said the Pixel 7 does charge very slowly when charged wirelessly but silent cilantro warned me about this up front so I was expecting it. I’m not wasting money buying a new phone until my contract is up in a year, then I’m happy the charger will work with a later Pixel.

Quick update. Everything but the Alcántara is here, it’s scheduled to arrive Thursday.

I’m making the harnesses and testing power supplies tonight.

Wrapping up today. Will get you guys tracking tonight or tomorrow morning.

Glad to hear, thank you! Please let me know if you have any questions during installation.

I ordered supplies for 10 kits and I had one person back out so I have 4 extras available if anyone wants one.

Do you happen to have any install instructions?
Just some guidance on the best way you found to route the cables.

I’d like to order a kit too. My Emira is being manufactured as we speak and this is an upgrade I’m really looking forward to doing.
