18 inch track wheels and tires

What is the advantage of the smaller wheels? I remember when wheels on cars were typically smaller and fitted with larger profile tyres. The trend was to modify cars with larger wheels to improve the handling.
Now the trend is to go the other way?

This is for people who track hence the thread name. Tires are about 40% cheaper in 18” and one of the single biggest track costs, wheels and tires are lighter probably around 30-35 lbs less overall, you can run any of the 200tw track compounds or any of the slicks you want that aren’t available in 20”.

On bigger wheels and handling, that’s because oem general purpose tires have soft sidewalls for comfort and bigger wheels have shorter sidewalls. That doesn’t mean they’re faster on track than track tires.

I checked your website and I don’t see one.
Which kit do you recommend?
I would like to use slicks.
Can you recommend the specs for 18s and what slick sizes do you recommend?
It would be nice to go as wide as possible in the front to have the same in rear so tires can be rotated. What makes the most sense?
We dont make or sell a kit as the sales on something like that would be super small. It will need to be custom made.
Running a square setup on these cars isnt possible, unfortunately.

Its raining so i cant put them on just yet.

I wonder of the gross weight of the smaller wheel but larger wall. Anyone know the tire weight difference from the 18" to 20"

It's rubber specific given tires have a just as wide a variability in weight even if the same size. @mr.suntorytime, if you get bored at home during our So Cal rain-out, can you weigh one of your OE wheel and tire vs your new track wheel and tire combo?

i sold my oe set to a fellow forum member. i can weigh the wheels i have rn if thats ok?

That's right, I forgot you already had aftermarket 20's. I think even that comparison is good.

Here are the rears
5.1 lbs less than 20”

There’s usually about a pound difference per tire (less) when moving down to an 18” in the sizes suntory picked when comparing the same or similar tires. 18” wheels with track rubber is going to be way lighter than oe wheels with oe rubber. The idea that you’d gain weight with track rubber in 18s is just unfounded according to every datapoint I found.

To be clear I’m not saying you said this but I’ve heard it a few times.

Based on some weights suntory sent me before and various tires out there, I think the 18" wheel package is going to be around 35lbs weight loss total.

Nice work!

What tyre sizes did you end going with front not and rear? It’s strange how I can’t see an obvious difference in the width between the front and rear wheels, they all look very similar in this image.
I guess I'm not the only early bird on this forum 🏎️
Oh wait, what time is it in your country because it's 6:30 am here in new york?
I would like to know as well, and if you could put full track slicks on these wheels, which brand and sizes would you install?

Which thread are you posting more details about you wheel and tires. And why aren't you posting on this thread dedicated to learning about 18 inch setups?

I did post in this thread, but prefer a separate post so I can easily link to it directly (for those looking for in depth details). These kinds of threads aren't as easy for me to keep up with and the details get lost as more posts are made.

Tires mounted - Vitour P1 265/35 - 295/30. Tire fitment looks great and enough room to run 275/35 - 315/30 if one desired.
