📓 Journals Observations on i4 re round trip to South of France

Just returned from holiday to South of France (Grimaud) in my i4. Clocked up around 2200 miles door to door, so virtually doubled mileage on car. Purchased the car in March 2024.

Glad to report not a single issue with the car. To be honest, I have not had any real issues with the car since purchase, so I think I have a good one. It is always a bit of a lottery with any new car as to whether it is a ‘lemon’ or not.

I had the front ppf’d shortly after purchase and the guy said the car had a good paint job which was reassuring having read about bubbling etc. only issue I had was some water ingress into the footwell from the door, but the local dealer soon sorted it out.

So main observations can be summarised as follows:

  1. Everyone loves the car! Young and old French people alike wanted to take pictures and said how nice it looks. Even in St Tropez where there are plenty of Porsches , Ferraris, Maseratis and Lambo’s, everyone loved the Emira! The best one happened when a nice convertible Porsche was driving past us on the other side of the road and the look on the girl’s face driving it was priceless. She mouthed ‘wow’ when she saw the Emira.
  2. I have the Seneca blue with full black pack and I must say it looks even better in the sunlight of SofF. It was my first choice of colour when ordering but then I had a wobble and thought is the colour too ‘shouty’ as I am not the hey look at me sort of guy, but I went with it and very glad I did.
  3. On the way down we went via Grenoble so we could do the Route Napoleon - popular driving route through southern Alps. The car handled the twists and turns with ease and it was a joy to drive. I used the Sport mode and the only issue I had was with the engine not moving up and down gears quickly enough in some of the twistier sections. With hindsight I should have used the paddles.
  4. It is very economical and quiet on the motorways in Tour mode. When cruising around 85mph I was getting around 36mpg. When cruising around 90+ I was getting around 34mpg.
  5. In Sport mode it still sounds quite throaty.

  7. The satnav is a nightmare - not intuitive. I had problems inputting destinations in Uk. You have to enter destination details carefully and include spaces in post code etc. in France I could never get it to pick up my destination despite entering the details in various different ways. We had to use google maps on mobile phone instead. I tried entering the post code first and last after the address but it never came up with the correct address. If anyone can enlighten me on this re Using in France, I would appreciate it.
  8. Wish the sat nav would show the current speed limit as when driving unknown roads it would really help
  9. The radio reception is poor. In other cars I have always been able to pick up the local Riviera Radio and it would come up with the name of the station which you could store, but I could only just connect to it and as the signal was weak the name of the station did not appear.
  10. I found the seats reasonably comfortable, although not sure my wife would agree. We took three days to drive down , but returned in two days spending around 8/9 hours in the car each day. We last drove down in my Jaguar XF which is like an armchair and so not comparable to the Emira. Personally, I would still like a sportier seat that hugs me more, but I guess they wanted it to fit a wide variety of shapes and sizes, hence how it is.
  11. We got a reasonable amount of luggage in the car. We managed to fit two carry on type suit cases behind each seat and a rucksack in between, along with luggage in boot. Obviously, due to heat in boot, we did not put anything in it that would be affected by the heat. We are not very tall which helped with fitting the luggage in the cabin.
  12. Managed to get from Grimaud to Calais on two tanks of petrol - just. Had only 50km range left when reached channel tunnel.
  13. I love the Emira front window. It gives a great view of the road and surrounding area.
  14. The cruise control worked well on the motorway. I disliked the fact when driving around town that if you increased the speed when in cruise control it would go up by 5mph but on the motorway this proved useful. I have just about mastered being able to increase or decrease it by 1mph, by lingering on the button. Still not as intuitive as other cruise controls.
Overall, the trip was a success and it was great to live with the car for two weeks+, rather than just use it at weekends.

Only minor disaster is that I curbed my rear wheel, but it is fixable. Was worried car might be vandalised but this was unfounded and careful where we parked it.

Great review! Amazing fuel economy too. Guess that's another perk of the i4. Sorry about the curbed wheel. Maybe a good excuse to buy an aftermarket set? 😉

1. I've not yet taken the Emira overseas but I have been to France several time with the Elise. The French loved it and were not reticent about coming forward to ask about the car - a lot less reserved than in the UK. I've always had a load of positive reactions in France (and also Belgium).

7/8. The in-car sat nav is not very good. Instead we just bring up Android Auto on the centre console and use Google Maps (this also displays the next turn on the drivers display). This will show the current speed limit as long as you have a route selected. You probably already knew this - just mentioning it in case.

Curbing your wheels just means you are driving it with the correct amount of spirit. :LOL:
 
Nice report, re in car sat is excellent giving distance to next fuel station (better than Waze or google) but as you say no speed limit display, or speed warnings as on Waze. ( maybe that si why Waze are a Le Mans Partner)

One of the OPs oringinal complaints was not knowing the speed limits. If that is an issue, then Waze resolves that. It is also more interactive than Google Maps as a lot of real time data is crowdsourced. As a choice I use Waze
Only exception to this, is when navigating via multiple waypoints to a destination, I have not found a way to get Waze to do this and on those occasions I do use Google Maps

I'll give Waze a try. On my Google maps I can enter multiple way-points to a destination but it always annoyingly collapses it down to just direct to the destination through Android Auto - I'm not sure why it always does this I must be missing a setting but it is very frustrating.

I get this issue too. however I kind of have a workaround
I assume you drag the route to the places you want to include as waypoints once you put the initial Start/End in? If thats correct, then y
My solution has been to use the left hand menu and "add Destination" and then move that up the list, so the original "End Point" of the journey is still the last entry. This seems to fix the issue of Android Auto collapsing the route, down to just the Start and End points/Shortest route
 
Fantastic write up! I have exactly the same spec as you and would love to do exactly the same trip you did. We took my E90 M3 down to Cannes and Monaco 10 years ago and that got quite a bit of attention but I can imagine the Emira is on another level.

I literally never used the satnav. You can't really beat Waze on carplay. Sorry to hear about the alloy. No worse sound in the world than that crunch / grind! Do let us know how you fare with the repair as they look like they might be tricky with the diamond cut design.

I tried connecting to Apple car play but it would not connect for some reason. When in France I use a Free fr sim to provide me with a mobile hotspot so I can get WiFi wherever I go. I then switch off my mobile data on my uk phone. But maybe I need to leave this on to get CarPlay?

Thanks Andy. If you ever do the Route Napoleon from the north like we did the Chateau Commanderie just outside Grenoble is a great stopover. It is nothing fancy but is comfortable and has a nice outside swimming pool a good restaurant (one of our best meals) and plenty of parking. You could not get any closer to the start of the route. Will report back on the wheel repair. I have found the Wheel Specialist near me which has a load of good reviews so will give them a try. It is a franchise but they seem to do a good job. Never saw a single other Emira. Did see an Elise and had a good wave at each other.

When I sort out my Apple car play I will try Waze. I have the app on my phone so have used it a while back. It gets good reviews.
 
Useful thanks. In Sep im taking two weeks driving down to Milan and back so fewer miles per day

I was in Geneva a couple of weeks back and saw an Evora. Not that many made, so presume it would be pretty rare in Switzerland.
