UPDATE: AAA (US) came and it took an hour but managed to insert a slider in by separating window with air pump. Door opened, key fob obtained with next issue: the car is not responding to the key fob (will obviously replace fob battery to see if that's the problem) so car won't start. Trying to figure out where the electronic fob activator is in the car. Some info says door handle (no), rear cup holder (no). Back to quirky-town but very happy to have the key out of the car....thanks guys.

According to the manual, it is in the center console as Eagle7 stated. Are you getting the "Key not in car" message? If not, you might have something preventing the car from starting not related to the key detection.

Some cars you use the fob to depress the start button when the fob battery is dead.

Have you tried a battery disconnect and reconnect? Had to do this a few times on mine prior to a sw update seemingly fixing the issue.

I think you have to place the fob "at the back" of the bottom of the console (see attached). I've done it when unlocking the car with the blade key to turn off the alarm, and it works.

Weird, mine seems to.. Well, let me qualify that - if I unlock the car with the fob and don't open the door for a given period of time it will re-lock itself. Might not qualify as auto-lock, but what I have observed..

Yep, mine does this too. If do open the door, then close it again, it does not then auto lock

Also, opening the drivers door turns on the car but opening the passenger door doesn’t, which might help save battery if you’re not going to drive the car.

But then how to explain why the car locked itself with the key inside? For the key to get inside in the first place either door must be opened first. The auto lock feature described in the manual assumes that the doors are not opened for a period of time after hitting the unlock button on the key fob.

I’d first check the owner’s manual for the fob’s backup spot, often near the steering column or under the cup holder. If it still won’t start, try holding the fob against the start button directly. That usually wakes it up. For the lockout, pulling the exterior door handle open while pressing the unlock button on the keypad sometimes helps. Also, carry the emergency blade separately next time to avoid this.

This is an old thread, so presumably the OP has long since resolved their issue. For future reference, what likely happened is that the car was in fact locked with the spare key whilst the primary key was in the vehicle. In this scenario, the car deactivates the primary key fob, and it will only be reactivated once the spare key unlocks the vehicle. This is done so that you can safely leave a key fob locked inside the vehicle, without the risk of a theif forcing entry through the window/boot and then using said key fob left inside to start the car (exactly what OP did with the locksmith).

The car does not auto-lock in normal use. It only auto-locks if you unlock the car, and then not open any doors for 2 minutes, as the car registers this as an accidental unlock and re-locks itself.
