Do you notice a ticking noise during acceleration?

So I am loving the Emira and at this point I'm just looking into a few small quirks that are somewhat annoying to see if they are normal or exceptions. One such thing is that whenever I accelerate (doesn't matter if it's light or hard acceleration), I notice a subtle ticking noise that I THINK is coming from behind me somewhere. It's difficult to determine the source and I'm going to have to let someone else drive while I try to locate it. The noise doesn't happen when I'm not accelerating so I'm thinking it's either something within the engine or just something in the car that vibrates only during acceleration.

At any rate, I've heard at least 2-3 others report this on Facebook or in this forum so I wanted to put it out there...do you notice this noise and if so, have you been able to identify or address it? It somewhat detracts from the otherwise glorious supercharger and exhaust notes from the engine under normal acceleration.

Well I can here the noise on my 125 mile 2026 Emira. As noted by someone else earlier in the thread, if I push laterally on the shifter it goes away.
 
My experience and remedy:

I have owned a new 2026 since May, and over time started noticing the same noise under moderate to high engine load around 2-3k rpm (mostly audible only in 1/2/3 gear). Car definitely didn't make this noise when new, even up to 1000mi, so I assume this is something that develops over time. First noticed it around 1200-1500mi, and car right now has ~2100mi. The "putting lateral load on the shifter" trick sometimes works, but inconsistent in my experience.

First I did remove the shift boot trim and drove around while trying to touch different parts of the shifter assembly, to see if the noise could be stopped by holding a certain component - no luck. I even tried disconneting and reconnecting all the parts that can be disconnected, but everything seems to be solidly attached. Some kind of vibrations that is synced to the noise can be felt on several points (e.g. https://www.emiraforum.com/threads/...ng-noise-during-acceleration.4357/post-158911), but exerting force on them doesn't change the noise at all.

Then I read about similar buzzing/vibration on the Elise forums, and decided to poke around the shifter arms on the transmission itself. The airbox needs to be removed to gain access. Getting the airbox out is fairly straightforward, which is explained well in the service manual, just be careful not to drop the nut when unscrewing the rear airbox bolt. The airbox itself can remain closed. There are also a few factory zipties holding wiring around the airbox that need to be cut and removing the left side engine cover trim helps with clearence.

Initially I suspected the rattling comes from either the cable attachment points to the transmission or the black bushing between the crossgate arm and the main shifting shaft, but all these points don't appear to have play. Then I inspected both shift cables, and found the intermediate metal sleeve (a short section between inner cable and the actual outer shell) can make metallic contact noises if I rock the inner shift cable with some amplitude. This sleeve interfaces the inner and outer cable on both ends with some rubber tubes from the factory to limit sleeve movement, but they seemed to have shifted (pun intended) slightly from their initial position over time, allowing some play.

Suspecting this was the cause to my ticking noise, I fully disengaged all 4 rubber tubing and went for a test drive. The noise did get worse! I could now hear the same noise in all 6 gears without those rubbers, even at fairly light load. Issue found, although it is unclear which cable was the noisier one.

(TLDR starts here)

So it turns out the "ticking" happens on the transmission side of the cable(s), and the noise is being transmitted through the cable housing into the cabin. Hence the illusion of ticking in the shifter area, and this might as well explain why it sometimes feels like the noise is coming from "behind".

I reattached the rubber tubes as tightly as possible and fixated them with zipties (on both cables, picture only showing how I did the gearshift cable). Now the ticking noise is gone! Hopefully the zipties can hold the tubes in place over time. I have driven the car ~200mi since, and they seem to have held up fine. It would be nice if someone can play with this a little more and come up with a better and more permanent solution.

On a (probably) unrelated note, I also noticed the gearshift cable bushing had some vertical play under the cotter pin, so I have put a piece of rubber grommet in between. I think this doesn't have anything to do with the ticking, but it does make me sleep better :D

Yes, the noise comes from the transmission and resonates through the cables into the cabin. If you actually found the source of the noise being that sleeve, that is awesome, you will have done what many many people have not been able to figure out. I need to try this, and thank you so much for posting this information. If this actually fixes it, i will be ecstatic

*edit*- went out to the car and tapped that sleeve with my finger, can hear a metal on metal taping sound. I can absolutely see how that might be the culprit. When i get enough time, i'll try your method since it is easy enough .

Same. I just tried this yesterday. The zip ties do absolutely nothing and the metal links still rattle.
 
Yep I tried the zip ties too, but only on the shifter cable. Noise still there. I couldn’t reach the crossgate, which in theory is where the noise mostly comes from.

I could see how maybe the sleeve is contributing to the noise. But putting zip ties in those spots does not at all decrease the play of the sleeve on the cable

I forgot to mention that there is some axial (longitudinal) play available for the sleeve in both cables, and when I put zipties on the longer rubber tubes, I tried to “preload” the tubes to push the sleeve AWAY from the bracket (i.e. towards the transmission). I figured this would minimize contact points. This crossgate was admittedly more fiddly, but I got some good visual of it by sitting in the trunk and bending over.

And as @seriously mentioned, metal clamps sound like a more reliable solution than mine and worth a try.
 
I finally took a look at this and confirmed that indeed the slip fit tube has play up and down and back and forth (technical terms).

When I told my dealer about a rattle they told me that they would not fix it because I had a short shifter installed. At first I thought that was weird, but now I realize it's because they are looking at that same slip fit tube. I noticed that the short shifter is all metal (no rubber gasket) and thought it might be contributing to the rattle, but many posts above confirm that the rattle is there even on fully stock cars (picture above confirms it).

The slip fit tube is connected at both ends by rubber fittings. Is there any reason this slip fit tube needs to be there? Can the whole thing be replaced by a rubber tube?

I also thought about pre-loading the rubber connection point and tightening it down, but not sure it would make much difference to the up and down play. Another thought I had was placing a zip tie (or maybe a screw down clamp) in front of the rubber fitting directly onto the cable to really force the rubber fitting to stay in a pre-loaded state. A tight pre-load may better keep the slip fit tube suspended.

Anyone else do some more experimenting with this?
 
This goes against the adding lightness mantra but adding some sort of mass in just the right spot to absorb vibrations might be the ticket.
