Cars are annoyingly loud lately. Is the Emira (3rd cat delete) too?

I am a 45 year old single dude who lives in an urban neighborhood I am probablyy getting too old for.

I've noticed recently, this year in particular, there are all these f*ckers driving around with LOUD cars that have that pop and bang burble shit going on.

Honestly I think this sound awful and sounds like shit is being dragged under the car.

I mean, dont get me wrong, I love the sound of good sounding car, but sometimes stuff like this just seems noise poullion.

And --- lets admit it, its mostly fun for the drivers and shitty for everyone else.

Maybe I am just getting old...




..WIth that said, I have a 3rd cat delete and my car can be quite loud, so, am I one of these guys? :)

I think some believe a Loud car is a good sounding car, and equate the two to be the same thing.

There's a trend for youngsters (here in the UK at least) to decat and install open exhausts on their cars to make them as loud as they possibly can. Which as youngsters tend to be smaller 4 cylinder engines due to budget restraints. I don't find the resulting sound to be particularly pleasant. As these engines tend to produce a mono-tone, bassy, harsh noise that doesn't change throughout the rev range. Made worse if they've elected to install a 'pop and bang' remap which adds a volley of fake gun fire when they let off the gas.

Where as I prefer a more musical changing exhaust note that builds to a crescendo and goes through a scale of different notes before it gets there. A sound typically produced by more exotic, higher cylinder count engines.

For me, if I'm honest I put the V6 somewhere in the middle. There's a bit of tonal variation, and it certainly builds to a distinctive crescendo. It sounds way better than my mono-tone 4 cylinder 718, but it's also a long way off a V12 Ferrari.

I'll caveat all of the above by saying that exhaust sound is of preference and opinion. There's no right or wrong, and what I like is no more valid than what someone else likes.

And back to the original question. Removing the third cat (I'm told as my V6 is stock) doesn't significantly change the volume at low revs as you still have the exhaust flaps operating, and the change at higher revs is only a moderate increase. So it doesn't become ridiculously loud (you still have the main cats in place). So in tour mode you can drive through the neighborhood without annoying everyone.
 
Part of the allure of a sports car is the drama. Loud noise. the progression of gears, and the g-forces. These are all a big reason (among other) that people do not consider EVs as sport cars.

I understand your frustration with the sound. I had an Evora that was basically straight piped. super angry and loud. As I aged the experience just got too raw for me. One of the major reasons I purchased the Emira was to smooth out the rawness of the Evora experience.
The Emira does a great job
I did do the 3rd cat delet and the Milltek valve controller, but not just for sound. Definate change in my cars behavior with the cat delet. Maybe it's just butt dyno but the car seems more responsive without.
The valve controller lets me "tune" the drama of the noise. Close em down and nice quite ride. Wide open let the drama fly.
If at 45 you are "getting old" that would make me truly ancient (almost 60)

I agree with too much sound. I find most motorcycles truly annoying with the sound. There is a balance.
 
The cat delete increases volume and drama but not in an antisocial way unless you have the valves open in Sport or Track modes. In Tour mode it sounds like a slightly more baritone version of the stock car, with totally reasonable volume. No one will look at you disapprovingly if you keep it in Tour until you're out of the neighborhood.
