Great idea. I was thinking of sticking PPF over the slit. But this is better, as the rocks should bounce off the rubber.My initial "fix" (see above) hasn't worked as rocks were still being collected and one side had the foam strip coming partially away and collecting rocks on its sticky side as well.
I've gone for @crestima 's solution with a sealing trim that pushes into the gap.
Let's see how this does.
