Could you use window screen material on the front hole? Allow air in but prevent rocks from entering threw.

you could but you would probably have a new area of rock collecting... ;)
Oh really? Where do you think they would collect? Ultimately, I would just like to know so I can clean them out after each drive.

Just revisited thread:
FYI, there is a foam strip at base of windshield/front dash line to fill the gap existing. Mine was removed to insert wedges resolving dash rattle noise. Wedges worked fine, but gap needed filling. Used this same sealer item, worked nicely, and keeps items from potentially “rolling into void, ending beneath dash, never to be recovered but announcing presence with new rattle/noise! Did have to push in some what aggressively; works great, looks smooth………..
Will address fender/stone issue now………...

My initial "fix" (see above) hasn't worked as rocks were still being collected and one side had the foam strip coming partially away and collecting rocks on its sticky side as well.

I've gone for @crestima 's solution with a sealing trim that pushes into the gap.
Let's see how this does.

Great idea. I was thinking of sticking PPF over the slit. But this is better, as the rocks should bounce off the rubber.

In the bike world we use motofoam for this kind of thing, but obviously it' going to restrict airflow a good bit. You could probably cut it so it's not visible from most angles.
