Just for fun. If you sold your EMIRA and bought another vehicle what would it be? (Around the same price or less than the EMIRA)

🍿

The Emira isn’t in the same league as a newer Ferrari and that’s not a knock on the Emira. In fact, it’s a huge compliment to Lotus that you moved from an Emira to a 296. But let’s be honest: that jump is like moving from your starter home into a 5,000-square-foot mansion. They’re simply not cross-shopped cars.

My favorite Ferrari has always been the 458. Driving that car felt perfect balanced, engaging, and special. I’ve driven four different 296s, and while they’re incredible machines, they’re honestly no more usable on the street than my 2024 Z06. It’s just too much power for public roads, especially around Austin or the DFW area. There are simply too many people on the road to enjoy what those cars are capable of.

I’d love to see a photo of the Emira and the 296 sitting side-by-side in the garage—that would be awesome. And I completely agree with your point: compared to the 296, the Emira really does feel like a toy.

This reminds me of an experience I had back in 2012 when I owned a Lotus Evora. I went on a drive with friends who had McLarens, Ferraris and Porsches. We stopped, swapped cars, and once I jumped into those more powerful cars, everything changed. Two weeks later, I sold the Lotus. I simply couldn’t drive it anymore as I needed more power the difference was that dramatic. The steering on the Lotus was very nice but the GT3 RS was unbelievable, and the McLaren and Ferrari were on another level entirely.

That contrast really sticks with you once you’ve felt it, especially if your on the I need more power side of your car needs.

The Emira is the most expensive car I’ve ever had or driven. I’ve never driven a Ferrari, or Porsche for that matter, so take what I type with a grain of salt.

What makes the Emira so special is that it’s more than the sum of its parts.

For the price, its steering feel and balance shouldn’t be better than (or as good as, or in the same league as) a McLaren, Ferrari, or GT series Porsche. But it is. The styling shouldn’t be as uniquely pretty as an Italian supercar. But it is. In other words, it shouldn’t scratch as many of the supercar itches as it does. At the same time, it’s not doing any of these things by emulating or pantomiming any of those heavyweights that it’s being compared to. It does it in its own, uniquely Lotus way. This is what makes it special.

It’s like when you go to a local restaurant, and the food hits all the notes, tastes like it was homemade, and was brought to your table by the chef who knows your name. Sure, it’s not a Michelin 3 star restaurant, but the experience is all the more memorable because it ISN’T a posh, “haute cuisine” restaurant. The guy behind the grill is doing more with less, and creating unique flavors.

The 296, GT3 RS, McLaren, etc., darn well better be near-perfect for the money they cost. Just like if I eat at a Michelin starred restaurant, and get charged accordingly, the food and overall experience should be above reproach, and that level of competence should be expected.

If I sell my Auto V6 Emira, I think I would go opposite and balls out with a Manual JDM car. Probably the F&F Tokyo drift RX7 Veilside Fortune in its original yellow/black... That car/movie changed my life and was the biggest impact in developing my car passion... Some older folks say that its the Ferrari F40 or F50 that was their "poster car", mine was that yellow RX7.
It just a hassle since the RX7 is a old car and I know nothing in car mechanic.

That Rx7 does looks a little bit like my yellow Emira with full black pack; never realized that!

Sold my 2025 ASTON to buy this. It was my 3rd Vantage. Great car but it’s a GT rather than a real sports car. It’s the reverse of the Lotus philosophy of make it as lite as possible.
Having more fun with the manual Emira.

If I ever decide to sell, a 718 Spyder (or GT4) with Deman gears and 4.5L built engine will probably be the replacement.
That would be interesting. I have never driven a modified 718. However, the GT4 and GT4 RS that I drove had their steering as the biggest downside. Is there any kind of modification to give it steering feel?

You could get 3 emiras for the price of 296:LOL: the 296 looks better in the metal but I cant get on with how the intake meets the rear arch. The flat/curve join looks all wrong to me.

I was looking at 360s and 430's when I bought the emira as my brief was essentially: Manual, 400-500bhp, rwd, mid engine, two seats. I wanted a car that was fully usable on UK roads without doing silly speeds in second gear. If I wanted that, I'd just get an EV. The emira ticks all those boxes and came with a warranty and not ferrari bills if anything goes wrong. So long as my brief remains the same, the car stays. There's things I dont like about the Emira but they're all fixable with modest spend.

If I was to say now what I'd possibly consider replacing it with it would a current model year Vantage, AMG GT or maybe a 911 Carrera T.

However, I need a practicle daily that I can put the dog on the back seat and a boot so the fact that I need two cars means I dont need to look at GTs.

If I had to sell my Emira, I would replace it with an Evora GT.

If prices came down into the $150k range, MC20.

If not that:
Jaguar F-Type SVR
XKR-GT
AMG GT

Vintage picks? XKE, XK120 coupe, or a split window C2 Corvette.

I’ll be the contrarian; my Emira V6 MT makes me happy, but I much prefer electric propulsion so I am eyeing Caterham Project V, JMEV SC-01, and the likes for a light and fun EV sports car.

Idk man I know it’s a downgrade, but after I drove the Honda Civic Type R Fl5 for a few days, I could see myself getting one. Power numbers, FWD aside etc, It was an absolute blast to drive and half the price of an Emira. It’s one of the cars you can go to town on and not feel bad about

Love the Caterham Project V. Monitoring closely as well. If it's actually produced and made available stateside it will be my next add (else probably an MC20).

I'm still on the fence about the mc20, I sat in one a couple years ago and I fit nicely. The exhaust sound and lack of manual transmission hold me back. It's actually the exhaust sound mainly, and I think it would just be so fast that it would be hard to really use it on the street, similar to other very fast cars I've owned.
