Steering wheel creaking noise

My creaking came back during a weekend trip a few weeks ago. It was pretty loud and could be provoked with any kind of suspension travel including putting weight on the wheel arch.

I took mine to the dealership today for software updates and to investigate the noise. Of course, it wasn't doing it today  - maybe because of the rain or it's colder, I don't know. However, I spoke to the service mechanic and he has retro-fitted some rubber cups between the springs and the dampers. Apparently these were not present in earlier models but are now standard from the factory on new cars. He said these have be added to address a variety of issues with creaks, squeaks and clunks.

I'm glad they have taken some action rather than just sending me away until I can reproduce it again. Hopefully this is the magic fix but only time will tell. I'm keeping my fingers crossed but I'll update here if the noises return. I suggest anyone who's going in for software updates, servicing or warranty work to enquire about having these fitted if you have an early model. FYI - mine was delivered in Feb 2024.

Yeah there’s a service bulletin about this:

Thanks for sharing. I’m scheduled to take my car in for them to replace the steering column 🤷‍♂️. I’ll also mention these rubber cups to them.

Dealer heard the creaking and said it’s coming from that. I don’t think that’s accurate though.

I'm a bit skeptical that this creaking noise can be fixed let alone permanently. I only say this because its a hand made car and not in high production. It is also a very bouncy car where you feel the springs at work all the time like ridding on a tractor. At least for my i4 sport suspension. Unfortunately its not a German built car to have them work out these intricacies I hate to say. I will take it to the dealership and report it but will advise them not to take it apart looking for the problem unless they are certain of where its from.
