Maybe a high quality independent mechanic would make more sense than a Toyota dealer? The engine isn't anything that requires a "Toyota expert" and I'd rather have the underfloor trays, etc, removed and installed by someone who cares, not a junior mechanic at a Toyota dealership.

TBH, I've had this in many manual cars over the years. I'd go as far as to say it is normal. A trick is to put the lever into first and then go into reverse, usually solves it.

Sorry, but that's totally wrong. Emiras are "flying off the production line." Hethel is working at capacity to meet the still significant backlog of orders. The problem is that they never expected to need a bunch of extra doors and they don't want to mess up the already delayed production...

Has anyone else experienced a noise from the steering wheel while turning? I notice it most in car parks when turning fairly tightly. I'd describe it as a flat clicking (clacking?) noise like two bits of plastic snapping against each other or a piece of plastic cracking.

But isn't everything you're describing here the dealer, not Lotus Cars? The problem with the US dealership model is that the manufacturer has their hands completely tied . . . the dealers have massive legally protected power so they can get away with this stuff.
