I was surprised too by this too. You would not want to breath the exhaust fumes directly as they are full of hot steam and CO2 with little O2. But assuming you also had a fresh air supply to cool and provide O2 you should be fine. There should be no CO if the engine is running correctly and...

Sounds more like you have Hill Start Hinderance... As others have mentioned there was a software fix for this problem - might be worth doing but if it has been back many times to the dealer surely they have done this.

Sounds about right. Lotus Esprit V8 was priced around £60K in 1996 - equivalent of £144K today. I would like a V8 Emira but wouldn't pay £140+ (might pay 10-12K over the V6 price though).

Ricardo make fairly light-weight V8 engines - only slightly heavier than the V6. They are also British. They may also have some spare capacity as the car maker they normally supply to isn't selling as many cars as expected. Yeah, unlikely I know but it would be nice.
