This is very interesting, and Volvo is on the list as one of the manufacturers that have already committed to using this. I like what's described. It's supposed to be available within the next few months. I wonder if Lotus would be able to allow this for the Emira?

Read the link very briefly…so new Apple CarPlay will over ride manufacturer’s software? Is that even a good idea? 🤷‍♂️ Who’s going to take responsibility if CarPlay interferes with oem computer systems and cause important systems like engine management or braking to crash? I’m all for integration, but if one system goes down, potential for everything to go is much higher.

It CAN take over all the dash graphics but I don't think it would take over the actual software that's controlling all the car's computers; just the way that information is displayed on the dash and the UI for that. All of that however is up to the car manufacturers and what they would allow. I'm hoping from the article, that user's would be able to add graphics for things that right now are only represented by a dash light or warning light. It would be nice to be able to choose an instrument cluster graphic that included all the info that older sports cars used to have with all their round gauges.

Nice find. Looks pretty cool to me. The ability to customize the display how I want it - sign me up.

This is just extended mirroring. Automakers offer up extensions of their data for the dash and Apple displays it in their own UX combined with the Apple user's data into one experience. Apple isn't taking over anyone's traction control. Although they may restyle the button for it.

The article mentions Volvo / Polestar are signed on for the extended experience so there's some hope Lotus will give the option as well. Especially since Porsche does too.

GM recently showed us what happens when you take CarPlay away, people get very upset. I imagine Apple is leveraging that public outcry.

Perfect, now when CarPlay locks up it can freeze the speedo and tach as well. Pure genius.

It's a very common failure on Elise to have the gauges just die or become intermittent. Recently happened to me, discovered many forum complains of the same issue, had it quoted as a $700 cluster rebuild or replace with a digital cluster.

So in a way it's the same as it ever was. 🤷‍♂️

Lucas electrics and Smith's gauges were always a part of the fun of owning a British sports car lol.

I get your point. I’m just not comfortable with the idea of potential problems that can cause damage to the vehicle (whether real or imagined). As a car’s electronics and computer systems become more and more sophisticated, the potential unintended consequences become more dire. To quote Scotty in Star Trek 3: “The more they overthink the plumbing, the easier it is to stop up the drain.”

This will most likely not be available via a simple update on the Emira. It’s a shitty move from Apple to call it just "CarPlay", as this is more of a "Android Automotive" instead of a current Android Auto / CarPlay.

This requires deep integration into the cars technical systems while current versions are more of a simple screen mirroring plus Bluetooth on steroids kind of jam.

Currently Lotus is overwhelmed with the task of fixing little UI issues, be it the useless headlight indicator or slightly more complex ones like making sure the internal wifi doesn’t take half a trips time to boot up - making CarPlay / AA available (Ignoring ECU since infotainment and ECU is probably hopefully a different team).

If it comes to the Emira, it’ll probably be limited to newer Car models. Maybe retrofitting would be possible by changing some controllers, but I wouldn’t get my hopes up too high.

Whatever happens it’ll take time. While "automotive" Carplay isn’t even available yet, Android Automotive was/is being used in the Polestar 2 (Volvo) as a test bed and still isn’t ready for the broad spectrum of cars (iirc).
