Lotus Emira V8 in Testing & Other News

So, as a bit of a tangent, I'm a numbers nerd and i keep track of how much gas I burn, and these numbers are kinda shocking. In one car, a V6 Infiniti over the 15 years I had it: Miles traveled: 101k Gallons of fuel consumed: 4,467 (28, 150 lbs) Pounds of oxygen consumed: 96,930 Pounds of CO2...

Ha! Yeah, I love V8's but I agonized for a month over my Emira versus the runner up a McLaren 600Lt. It's the first time in my life I could justify buying an expensive car. I really liked the McLaren's incredible power, but everything else about the Emira was better, with handling being on-par...

Lotus Emira V8 in Testing & Other News

I said the exhaust coming out on a "smoggy day" is cleaner than intake air, because the engine is catalyzing away all the ozone and NOx in the air, and emitting almost pure CO2 and water.

Who here has tracked their Emira?

Yes, I’m on OEM rotors but they don’t seem to have any weird deposits. I’m tracking the Nitron Clubsports on May 5, I’ll have some feedback then. I didn’t get the axle lift since it’s quite expensive and I’m not lowering the car.

I had a similar experience in my Elise when I started to become a fast driver after a few years. My brakes were holding me back and the advice was to do a BBK in front, and relocate the front brakes to the rear, but with sintered metal pads, I could break traction on Yoko A005's when braking, so...

Who here has tracked their Emira?

By the time I tracked my Elise, people had figured all this stuff out, but with the Emira, I'm experimenting. It's expensive to replace pads and tires and even suspensions after each track day :) My Emira came with touring suspension (I bought an orphan) and that was absolutely terrible at the...

Who here has tracked their Emira?

I've tracked EBC RP1's once at this point, on fresh Castrol SRF at Laguna and I found the same as you guys are seeing; inconsistent pedal travel throughout the day. On my first track day, I tried EBC SR11 and those have WAY too high of a friction coefficient for this size of pad/rotor. Too much...

New V6 versus Turbo 4 video

I disagree with his conclusion, but then again, I chose a V6/MT as my car. He compares the exhaust note of the V6 in Tour mode versus the I4 in Track mode. That's kinda unfair. I agree that the I4 delivers power better and the DCT has more ratios and faster shifting, but the exhaust note is one...

What's crazy about it? I was oversimplifying, but when warm, and with a good condition catalyst, it will be very clean _most_ of the time. Where I live in CA, in a valley surrounded by mountains, we are very susceptible to smog, so I'm interested in clean cars. Most of this smog comes from old...

Lotus Emira V8 in Testing & Other News

It's possible, but very expensive, and what makes it almost impossible is manual transmissions. When the ECU controls both engine and transmission, it can synchronize the shift with engine fuel mix, so that the engine can predict the loss of load during a shift. With a manual transmission, when...

Lotus Emira V8 in Testing & Other News

3200 lb cars aren't really momentum cars, they can't keep their momentum very well through turns. I love my Emira, but it can't hang with a real momentum car in the corners. I've tracked my Elise for 16 years and now I've done a couple of track days in the Emira, and it's a fat piggy. I love it...

AFAIK, other than the low oil pressure warning, which doesn't use an analog pressure sensor, the car doesn't know the oil pressure, so there is nothing to read.

No, Evora doesn't work. I just use the generic OBD-II and it's good enough for me. It gets RPM's, throttle opening (which isn't same as throttle pedal) and a few temperatures and fuel level.

I got the clubsports. They recommend a rebuild every 10 hours of use on track, but I'll do it once a season. If they are too stiff, I will ask to lower the spring rates then. I haven't yet. On my next track day, I'll be using some Nitrons combined with a solid alignment/corner balance and grippy tires. Might be good enough. I don't particularly mind this understeer tendency because it can be managed.

Carplay volume glitches with driving directions

They certainly didn't simplify anything like the company motto implies when they designed the volume sliders on this thing. I hope that in due time, we come up with enthusiast written software that works better. I've written this kind of software years ago, and there are a bunch of VWAG cars...

Carplay volume glitches with driving directions

For me, it's a combination of Waze combined with either Podcasts, Pandora, or just music in my library. The reason I think it's a bug in Emira software is that I I've never had this issue with this phone in either my wife's Subaru, my Cayenne or even the CP-71W headunit in my Elise.

Oh, it was Laguna Seca. I scrubbed quite a bit of rubber off, and I mis-spoke, it was the front right. I haven't yet worked out the proper pressures for this car, as it's new to me, and I scrubbed the middle of the tire too much to risk another track day. It's ok for the street. I would have...

When I'm using Carplay, either wired or wireless, with driving directions, I have a funny problem. Disabling steering wheel touch controls?

It's a hybrid touch/button. The problem is that the whole thing is so easy to depress, you're always hitting it with your palm...

    911T vs Emira

I drove a friend's 911T (since dealers don't allow test driving these around here) and also Cayman GT4 when I was cross shopping cars last summer, and I preferred the Emira for two major reasons. The front end feels much more "alive" than in the Porsches and it takes a squat in a turn similar to...

It's really hard to tell on the street. This is a big, heavy car and the wheels went from "very heavy" to "less heavy", but they're still heavy. I can't push too hard because the tires are still slippery due to the manufacturing lubricants. I'll know next time that I track it.
