Both Maserati and VW used the names of winds for their models at some point. Maserati had the Mistral, Khamsin, Bora, and Merak while VW had the Passat. The piano manufacturer Petrof also uses these names in their current grand piano model range.
I am essentially height/weight proportionate but short at 5'7" or so and with a 30 or 31 inch inseam. That makes me slightly long-torsoed perhaps. I'm surprised more haven't complained about the same issue with the stock pedal arrangement.
I get the clunk on full lock, too. It's more like a loud click, but I haven't looked into it. Subjectively, it feels like it's a pressure relief being activated.

I have a 1969 Beetle! In solving the floor-mounted gas pedal problem it will introduce two more: the brake and clutch pedals are floor mounted as well.
It is supposed to be there and mine got loose at either end as well. First service took care of that but I'm still waiting for a replacement driver side seat track assembly. Mine pops when the seat is moved all the way back for ingress/egress.
I found the pedals "mismatched", with the clutch too far away and the gas pedal too close. I couldn't achieve a happy medium so I sandwiched a spacer between 1" and 1.5" thick or so between the clutch pedal and the pad. I had to drill out the rivets that held the pad to the pedal and replaced...
