My Specs:
Emira V6
Hi, has anyone installed a dash cam to the inside of the internal glass on a Emira and where (on top) ?
I am wondering on the picture quality going through two pieces of glass?
Any assistance with running the rear cable from the rear dash cam to the front mounted dash cam located by the rear view mirror to ensure the cable is hidden?
The dash cam I am looking at installing is the VIOFO A229 Pro 2ch.
Thanks

As far as I know if you want a very neat installation without any wire exposed, you can only do it under the diffusor. There is no place to hide the wire completely on the rear glass.

Also make sure your rear cam has a very high refresh rate (you can tell by checking if it uses a fiber optic wire) if you are using it for a digital rear view mirror. If it is only used for recording then it's fine.

Since you are using the VIOFO A229, another option is to get the interior camera and mount it next to the front camera. This way you get a view through the side windows and partial back. Not sure how useful it would be for reading license plates

That’s something I had not considered, as I didn’t realise the interior camera is like a fish eye lens. To have this option, I think you may need to purchase the A229 pro 3 ch version.

You can buy the camera separately on VIOFO website

Also I don’t think a rear camera would survive somewhere against the hatch glass, it gets way too hot there. The adhesive would melt off and the camera would likely die.

I think the best solution would be a camera mounted to the license plate frame.

Correct, however mounting on the license plate holder would require drilling a hole for the fiber optic wire and also exposed to the heat of the exhaust. We have tried a few places and concluded that mounting at the bottom of the diffuser is probably the best. The bottom of the back up light even has holes for you to run wire through.

One could get a wireless license plate holder camera

Wireless is probably fine for recording but for digital rear view camera it will be dangerous.
and why is that. It shows me where the car is ...any ms delay is irrelevant. There aren't ms changes in a car apppearing or moving that far in that timeframe

I agree with you Kitkat that a dash cam would not survive mounted on the glass above the engine.

Hence my original question was if there was any one out there who has mounted a rear dash cam on the inner glass and their feedback on this with regards to functionality and installation.

I have also heard there could be interference with DAB reception.

I have my rear-facing camera stuck on the cabin side of the inner window. No issues in 2+ years of operation.

(the lens shown in the picture has been temporarily twisted down 90 degrees to attach a CPL filter)

A sample of what you can see thru this 1080P (1920x1080) camera shown below. Picture quality not enough to easily read the license plates of other vehicles. You may have better results with a better camera (4K, 8K).

I have mine mounted like this — it’s fine but it just doesn’t capture a whole lot.

Thanks for your reply and the images of your rear camera both installed and the picture from it 👍.
How did you run the wire from the front dash cam please ?
Have you experienced any DAB issues since installation?
Thanks

Yes I have installed Nextbase camera's front & rear. (UK) NO problem, took the power feed from socket next to interior drivers mirror to the front camera and the lead from the rear to the second socket on the front camera, tucked the wiring behind trim, easy to fit. Rear quality and view angle is restricted but better than nothing. The main problem with the rear is when it rains as the rear window has no wiper, also in the dark you get street light and other lighting reflections.

Thanks for your feedback, your instal sounds the same as I will do. Have you noticed any DAB interference since installation?

Installation was done by my dealer prior to delivery of the car, but I was told the cable runs behind the roof liner, connecting to the front camera / main module.

Can't comment on this, as we don't have Digital Audio Broadcasting in my country.

That is brilliant!!! Thank you. I am about to install one and did not consider this as an option. Thank you.
