After having a long-term lust for Lotus, my dream has finally come true. I apologize for the long story, but it helps to convey how meaningful this is to me.

My first exposure was in the summer of '71 when I was in college driving a Datsun 1600 and I saw a Europa S2 for sale near me. At the time I was following Formula 1 and had even travelled to see and exhibition race at Brands Hatch were Emerson Fittipaldi was driving the iconic JPS. When the opportunity arose, it was only natural to arrange test drive of any Lotus I could get to. It was unlike anything I had ever driven even if it had a disappoint end 15 minutes because it was overheating. Nonetheless; it left an indelible mark on my brain. The next car I bought was a 72 Datsun 240Z after graduating with my engineering degree, and that led to a succession of other Z-cars I've owned over the next 50+ years. That includes two 300ZX 2+2 cars (when we had our young kids), a 300ZX TwinTurbo (may favorite which got me started in HPDEs), a 40th Anniversary 370Z, and now my current 370Z Nismo which has seen the most track time. Of course all of these were MTs and cars that could be my daily driver yet satisfy my love for driving no matter if I was driving around town, on a rare twisty road around Dallas - Fort Worth, or on a track.

All the while though, every time I saw a Lotus Elise or Exige at the track or one come up for sale I thought "if only ..." I did a test drives in a beautiful Esprit and a Elise yet had to walk away because they could not be my daily driver and could not afford to have two sports cars. I was close to retiring when Lotus announced they were going to produce their last ICE car for around $80,000 USD; and I imagined that owing one could become a real possiblity. After seeing the unveiling in 2021, that lust ramped up to at least a 7. I placed my refundable deposit in Jan 2023 putting me at #120 on the list, but Iknew I would at least get my chance to do an early test drive. When that day came, to my unbridled glee, it was a Magma MT configured almost exactly as I had done on-line. That experience notched my lust up another level, but now the price had increased to $105K. My order slot finally opened up in Dec 2023, but I didn't feel like I had enough reserve funds to purchase, so I told my dealer to keep my deposit and I would wait for 2025 base which I hoped would be more affordable. Then in Jan 2024, I saw that Lotus was offering the Lotus Driving Academy was offering a full day "Tailor-made Advanced Experience" in Hethel for the price of my deposit. I told my wife that maybe this is another way I can scratch this itch. Well, four months later my daughter (who also occasionally tracks her 370Z) and I flew to London and made our way to Hethel. Our day on the track with our instructor Toby was incredible, and experiencing that full driving engagement and uncompable turn-in ability ramped-up my lust to 10+. You could say that scratching that that itch turned into a breakout of hives!

At long last, I now have dream car! I was able to find Magma FE with only 2,600 miles from a gentleman who needed to sell before moving to Europe and he gave me a much better deal than I ever expected. It is configured almost exactly as I wanted except for silver instead of black wheels. However I got that corrected as part of my full PPF and ceramic coating of full body, wheels and calipers.

I still have a few things to do before getting it on the track, but I already know that it is meeting all of my dream and expectations of my 55 year wait of being a Lotus owner. Thanks for letting me share this journey here and I look forward to sharing the best days to come!

Nice story and great intro to the Forum. Beautiful Emira and I agree your rim choice has improved its look! Enjoy!

What a great story. Lusting after a Europa and then finally getting an Emira - that's a long wait. Welcome to the gang!
Hopefully you can join some Lotus owners groups in the US and experience that side of Lotus ownership too.
Your car looks amazing - the Magma Red looks fantastic with the black wheels.

Great to hear your story, and welcome aboard! Sadly though, we must become mortal enemies, as silver wheels are Correct™️ and black wheels are the work of Satan.

Amazing story and the car looks incredible!
Magma red was my #1 choice but I decided to go for yellow mainly because since I'm red/green colorblind, dark red becomes more and more brown for me every year... Sad but I enjoy the yellow as much!

Congratulations!

I remember when the 2nd gen 300ZX came out I went to look at it. The engine was so tightly packed into the engine bay I joked to the dealer that Nissan could have saved some cost by just painting the engine the color of the car and left the hood off. It wouldn't have looked much different. That car was a such a game changer in 1989.

Lovely read and story. Congratulations on the Emira :)

Congrats! About to live a very similar dream myself as I search for a first edition magma red manual.

My own path of Lotus ownership went in the opposite direction. A poster of Jim Clark sitting in his Indy winning Lotus in my junior high bedroom was enough of a prompt for me in the early seventies to buy a very well used Lotus 14 (Elite S2) race car to fulfill my race driver ambition. I had no money and my primary wheels were a long progression of $300 Ford Torinos and rusty Fiats, but it kept me in the game. A Lotus Super Seven race car replaced the Elite one season later, then struggling through college I traded the Seven for a S2 Europa that got me through my college years and well beyond, eventually being modified into a Gordini configuration.
The Europa was eventually sold and though I couldn’t afford an Esprit we ( my wife and I) bought a new M100 Elan. That lasted years and for the first time a Lotus became my daily driver. That was replaced with a new Elise which was my daily driver for the next 14 years. After a several year break with a new Jaguar F-Type R, we bought our current Lotus Emira. is this our last Lotus? Don’t know, but lately a Caterham is looking pretty appealing. Somehow during all my financial challenges over my years a Lotus always seemed to find our garage.

If you are willing to buy a Lotus in Canada, since its winter here there is some good rebate on all model manual Emira in Montreal.
(Price is in CAD with the Canadian luxury sales taxes added to the price.)
Canadian luxury taxes is +20% of the value over 100k; so you can use that equation to calculate the price before added tax:
Divide by 1.4 to have the price in USD.

Thanks, I may bite the bullet later in the year on a new '25, but only after spending a few months looking for my preferred config used. I don't need new and might as well save the ~15k USD or so.

I think the most impressive part of this great story is that you dailied an Elise for 14-yrs. I’m certain your back thanks you for moving to the Emira.

Yeah, the car didn’t get older, but I did

Exactly what my Dad, rest his soul, would say. Never got over black wheels (so I have silver - surprised?).

Awesome vignette.
For me, this adds significance to what I drive, every time I drive it.

Have to wonder whether Geeley would care about what you and Tullos expressed. Just sayin . . .

What an incredible history with the brand! It’s fascinating that our paths went in opposite directions—you jumped in early while I waited 55 years—but the destination was the same. I love hearing stories like yours of how people discovered and unleashed their passion for these cars. It makes the ownership experience that much richer."

For me it was the first Esprit, and the amazing view of that alien shape the first time I saw one in-person. I'd already seen a Countach but the Esprit was so much more delicate and elegant. I was 100% in, and decided one day to try to get one. I was...eight.

Then I got to a stage, and Lotus got to a stage with the Emira, where it became a slightly less preposterous idea...so got the Emira.

About twice a year I bring it to a local, very small cars and coffee event which has a bit of everything and the owners tend to hang out. Imagine my joy when someone showed up with an original Esprit, built when I was...eight.
