    Factory Tour Thread

I have experience of implementing the Toyota manufacturing system in an many existing factories ( ie, its culture change as opposed to Green field culture establishment). The first action is often to disband QA and fire the managers, who will not accept the change. We then told all the staff...

What gets me about those laser fangle dangle measuring machines it deals with ‘built’ assembly , sort of after the event and thus correction is waste/extra cost. Shut lines are a function of pressed/moulded panel to within tolerance and then assembly/fit to correct position…..so get those things...

    Lotus Marketing opinions?

Trouble with marketing is that the persons managing it are trying to communicate something they want understood……….but the audience can’t figure out the message. My guess is they are trying to build brand values…….but Colin Chapmen kinda set it in stone when he said weight is the enemy of...

    No Sighting of any I4

A number in assembly a while back. They sub-assemble the engine with rear suspension, it's compact. My guess they were for homologation /type approval.

Do we know the Emira's MPG fuel economy yet?

Normally , real world is 20% less than WLTP. So 20 mpg or 4 mpg on the M25🤣

    Provisional WLTP readings

That is surprisingly good for an old tech engine.

    Prospective Insurance Cost

Isn't it driven by Postcode, cost of spares, on site security, ie garaged/on road location plus cost of replacement. My GT4 is about £400 and my Mclaren 720s about £1500 with full invoice cost in first two years.

    Black pack and privacy glass

You will save money by wrapping the roof in Black ppf......with the bonus its protective and removable. I have privacy glass in my Dailey and it restricts clarity via rear mirror and 3/4 back view.......I'm going with both in my spec, lol.

Lotus again delays FE delivery for me.

Just one observation, current delivery delays will not project into the future. As the factory beds in ( and the suppliers) then assembly cycle times will shorten and, thus, daily out put increases. There will be uncertainty for sure but as the processes mature certainty arrives and...

Lotus again delays FE delivery for me.

As Tom E says, production is just in time, batch size is one. Takt time is currently planned at 17 mins iirc.......this means a car ls completed every 17 mins when factory is fully bedded in. Output is disconnected from order book, typically it matches average daily demand. So the Takt time...

    My trip to Hethel

Where is the battery? What's the change like in V6 slush box in sport mode compared to the DSG? What measuring sticks are applied to the shop floor....ie 10 cars a day? Number of no fault cars per day? Behaviour is driven by measuring sticks, hence the question.

    PPF or Ceramic

Modern water based paints are soft and mark if you look at them. That drives a lot to ppf. In the old days a respray was cheap but now with two and 3 part paints at £1000 per litre ppf has a benefit.... But it's down to individual preferences.

    Lotus 3rd Phone Call

Repeating my other posts, car Manufacturers do not have the skills to communicate with customers. Traditionally their skills are transaction logistics with retailers. It's retailers who have customer management skills. So ,what we are experiencing is the transition to an Agency model of...

June delivery delay - Lotus now says July…

Car manufacturers do not have the skills to manage customers, that's always been the retailers job. So this transition to an Agency model will cause angst until they develop customer skills......my guess is it will take some time. Polestar have it and Lotus is in the same ownership so I expect...

June delivery delay - Lotus now says July…

This is the reason given in my email. Mine was originally July delivery/June build. Shortages across the automotive industry have led to some delays in production, but we are happy to inform you that your new Emira is now scheduled to be completed in July 2022. We appreciate this is later than...

    Manual Or Auto Box

It’s interesting how modern slush box’s are very fast and smooth changing gear…..BMW have ditched DSG in their M 5 models for slush, principally as they are more tuneable to meet emissions regs but also they are lighter…..software development has put the slush box back in play. The merc box is...

Toyota 2GR-FE engine vs. BMW B58 (Supra) engine

I currently drive a manual 718 GT4. Engaging is the word I use when I'm asked 'wot's it like". Add the naturally aspirated flat 6, torque laden flux capacitor, that has to be managed within the rev range with direct steering and it's a recipe for fun.......the PDK box is a faster car, zzzzzzzzzzz

Lotus again delays FE delivery for me.

Yes, its like poking a jelly I guess. I know , from experience, how complicated it can become in development and start up.......surprises with tooling, materials, processes, design, fabrication, suppliers etc......its the uncertainty that makes it hard to take a position as until something is...

Would you delay an August delivery to September?

You determine the registration date but you may be asked to pay at build completion, ie August if they are fussy about cash flow. I have a Porker for delivery in December but the dealer will register March 1st......my choice.

Lotus again delays FE delivery for me.

The McLaren Artura is 2 years late with no official launch date…….thus the design is 4 years old and now been superseded , technically, by rivals. Lotus are on the case and manufacturing with launch dates confirmed (dates at Lotus are by month!) so at least it’s imminent! That’s OK by me…..I think?

June delivery delay - Lotus now says July…

I was at the Porsche Experience Centre at Silverstone today.......everybody I spoke to said their orders had been delayed by several months but many had no re-confirmation of due date......911's, 718, Taycans, Macans all 12 month plus wait........I know Lotus is a different issue , being a start...

V6 manual Clutch pressure, it's heavy or OK

In a recent review of the latest edition of the Evora the reviewer mentions the clutch is heavy, to the point that in traffic it became wearing on his leg. The Emira reviews have mentioned the 'heavy' clutch. Any views from Evora owners what it is like on a long trip and in traffic? Currently...

Emira should have started with 450hp.

One of the best drivers car I have owned is a Mclaren 720......its capability was astonishing and truly ballistic performance........but every time I drove it on the road it was, potentially, 'straight to jail'. Don't get me wrong, it was a fun car. So, I'm firmly in the camp that 400 or so bhp...
